A palindrome post.
Two nights ago on our way north we decided to try a boonsdocks site 15 kilometers out a ... yes you guessed it...a washboard road to an area near a lighthouse. The view from there is magnificent of the sand beach 25 miles long are (on which the other side of is the world largest open air evaporative sea salt mining operation. Punto Santo Domingo. We chose a site sheltered from the wind in the dunes and found a trail out to the cliff where we watched multiple whales rise and blow!
So here are a smattering of shots taken from there and on our way to the last night stay north of San Filipe.

Jupiter and Venus in the dunes
Today we are back in the US. Night before last we camped on a beach area north of San Filipe, a sorry town on the northern coast of the Sea of Cortez. It once was a hub of the action spots for US citizens but now there is a good road to more southern beaches the city/town has fallen on rough times. We left at 7:30 still trying to decide if we should go through Mexicali or drive over the mountains to Tecate to exit, having heard the long lines in Mexicali were bad. Nothing prepared us for the crazy high road to the west (we had chosen Tecate). Pouring in torrents with 50 mph winds as we crossed. The road of course had those famous pot holes thrown in for extra anxiety. Arriving in Tecate we were pretty strung out and the way across was a zoo. Nonetheless (!) we survived. Within a few miles the then rain turned to snow, heavy at times and sticking. What a weird thing to be on a beach in the morning and snow in the afternoon.
Weather reports were also predicting strong winds from the southwest. We had booked ahead an Air B&B in Julian CA. We received a call from the owner saying all the roads were closed for a couple days as the snow was too deep. We punted and headed to the Salton Sea (Salton City) … don’t do that… it is a dump. Very tired and now getting on to nine hours driving in nasty weather we turned north again to Borrego Springs (which also had crazy winds and in the 40’s). We were lucky to get a room in town as many camper types were not enjoying the cold either.
And here we rest for a day to do laundry, clean camper and think what next. We will take a day to explore around here but it seems that the Southwest is having along cold winter. We will either cut a couple weeks off the trip and head home or… head to the southern gulf coast. News this morning is for tornados in that area…
Well… back home in Buckland we have 9” snow on the ground with 14-17’ predicted for the weekend.
